Former Residence of Soong Ching-ling

Located at No.1843 Middle Huaihai Road, it was built in 1920. It is German-style garden residence of fake-three-floor brick-and-wood structure, with L-shaped plane and boat-shaped appearance. It is milk white as a whole. The residence was originally the villa of German ship-owner Bauer. It was later owned by different people successively, and was nationalized after the Anti-Japanese War ended in 1945. In the spring of 1949, Soong Ching-ling moved to the residence, where she was engaged in national affairs. Here she once received state leaders such as Mao Zedong, as well as foreign state heads and dignitaries such as Kim Il Sung. After Soong Ching-ling died in May 1981, the residence started to be open internally in October that year. In May 1988, Soong Ching-ling Memorial Residence in Shanghai was established. Its main building was overhauled in 1988 and 2006. The Former Residence of Soong Ching-ling was announced by the State Council as National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit on June 25, 2001.
