Former Residence of Sheng Xuanhuai
Located at No.1517 Middle Huaihai Road, the Former Residence of Sheng Xuanhuai was built by a German in 1900. It is a garden residence of the neoclassical architectural style, with a three-floor brick-and-concrete structure, rectangular body, and Roman classical columns as the framework. The porch is lined by circular arc-shaped porticoes with Tuscan columns. The building was originally the residence of a businessman, and Sheng Xuanhuai settled down here in 1912. Sheng Xuanhuai (1844~1916), born in Jiangsu, was one of the first industrialists in modern China. The Northern Warlord Duan Qirui started to live in the residence in 1933 and spent his last three years here. During the period, Chiang Kai-shek once visited the residence. The Former Residence of Sheng Xuanhuai was announced by Shanghai Municipal People's Government as Shanghai Municipality Cultural Relics Protection Unit and Shanghai Municipality Outstanding Heritage Architecture on September 25, 1989.
