Residence at No.79 Fenyang Road

The Residence at No.79 Fenyang Road was built in 1905. It is a garden residence of the French Renaissance architectural style, with a brick-and-concrete structure and white facade, known as “Little White House at Sea”. The building was originally the mansion of General Director of the Municipal Board of Directors in Shanghai French Concession. After the Anti-Japanese War ended in 1945, the United Nations' World Health Organization once used it as its office. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, Chen Yi once lived here. In 1954, the building became the office of Sino-Soviet friendship authority. In 1963, Shanghai folk craft artists worked and taught craft here. Former US President Ronald Reagan, former British Prime Minister Heath and other foreign leaders once visited here. The Residence at No.79 Fenyang Road was announced by Shanghai Municipal People's Government as Shanghai Municipality Cultural Relics Protection Unit and Shanghai Municipality Outstanding Heritage Architecture on September 25, 1989.
