Xinkang Garden

Located at Lane 1~22, No.1273 Middle Huaihai Road, the lane houses with garden was built in 1934. It is composed of eleven two-floor Spanish-style garden residences with brick-and-wood structure and four five-floor modern apartment residences with a composite structure. The eleven apartments in the north are on both sides of the main road. Residents enter and leave the building by floor and by household. There is a large garden before the residence. The four apartments in the south have an enclosed layout. Xinkang Garden was originally a private garden built by Ezra & Company, Edward, and was later rebuilt into a garden apartment. In 1949, it was renamed Xinkang Garden. Besides employees of Ezra & Company, Edward, some foreign nationals also lived here. Famous artists Zhao Dan and Yuan Xuefen and famous painter Yan Wenliang once lived here as well. Xinkang Garden was announced by Shanghai Municipal People's Government as Shanghai Municipality Cultural Relics Protection Unit and Shanghai Municipality Outstanding Heritage Architecture on September 25, 1989.
