Former Residence of Zhang Yuanji

Located at No.24, Shangfang Garden, Lane 1285, Middle Huaihai Road, the Spanish-style garden residence of brick-and-wood structure was built in 1939. It has three floors. Its fence gates, window grilles, balconies and railings are all made of cast iron. Zhang Yuanji lived here from 1939 to 1959. Zhang Yuanji (1867~1959), born in Haiyan, Zhejiang Province, was a famous publisher in China. He founded the Oriental Library and Hanfen Library, and planned and published reference books in Chinese and foreign languages such as Chinese Etymology Dictionary (the first new-type dictionary in China) and A Dictionary of Chinese and Foreign Celebrities. He once served as representative of the first session of the National People’s Congress and Director of Shanghai Research Institute of Culture and History. The Former Residence of Zhang Yuanji was announced by Shanghai Municipal People's Government as Shanghai Municipality Cultural Relics Protection Unit on June 1, 1992, and as Shanghai Municipality Outstanding Heritage Architecture on February 15, 1994.
