Former Site of Wang Garden

Located at No.128 Guilin Road, it was built from 1931 to 1934. In the southwest of the garden is the ancestral grave of Huang family. In 1931, Huang Jinrong expanded the garden which was then also called “Wang Garden”. The traditional scenery practices of Jiangnan classical gardens were used to build this garden. The architectural composition of the garden is natural and matches the surrounding scenery. The highlights of the garden include Four Religion Hall, Yuanyang House, Yi Pavilion, etc. After 1937, the garden was used by Japanese army invading China as barracks for a time, and the buildings in the garden were destroyed. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, the garden was nationalized. In 1957, Shanghai Management Office of Parks and Woods took over the garden and started to fully restore it. The garden has been officially opened to the public since 1958. The garden was renamed “Guilin Park” as it is full of Guihua (sweet-scented osmanthus). The Former Site of Wang Garden was announced by Shanghai Municipal People's Government as Shanghai Municipality Cultural Relics Protection Unit on April 4, 2014.
