Former Site of Shanghai Special Municipal Government

Located at No.48 Pingjiang, it was built in 1919. It is composed of a main building and an annex building which are connected by the corridor on the second floor. The main building has a brick-and-wood structure, and the facade is vertically divided into three sections. The buildings were originally the office of the magistrate Charge of Southeast Jiangsu Province established following the Revolution of 1911. After the establishment of Shanghai Special Municipal Government in 1927, they were used by the government as office buildings. Later, they were used by Shanghai Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1933 and by Shanghai Military Medicine Committee in 1936. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, they were nationalized, with the main building used as kindergarten of Medical University, and the annex building used as dormitory for staff of Medical University. Since 1975 when the First Research Institute of Telecommunications Technology exchanged premises with Medical University, the buildings have been used as office buildings. The Former Site of Shanghai Special Municipal Government was announced by Shanghai Municipal People's Government as Shanghai Municipality Outstanding Heritage Architecture on October 31, 2005, and as Shanghai Municipality Cultural Relics Protection Unit on April 4, 2014.
