New Shang-Yuan Building

Originally known as Shang-Yuan Building, the building was completed in 1900. It was an epsilon-shaped three-floor building with a bell tower at the top, and served as the University Department during the Nanyang Public School period. At the end of December 1911, Sun Yat-sen visited the university and delivered an important speech to the students and teachers before he went to Nanjing to assume the post of Provisional President of the ROC. In 1927, to commemorate Tang Wenzhi, former president of the university, the auditorium was named as Wenzhi Auditorium. After demolition and reconstruction in 1954, the building was renamed as New Shang-Yuan Building. The original three-floor building was expanded to a four-floor building. It has a reinforced concrete structure and a fully symmetrical layout, with the axis completely going from the main entrance to the back gate. The New Shang-Yuan Building was announced by Shanghai Municipal People's Government as Shanghai Municipality Outstanding Heritage Architecture on October 31, 2005, and as Shanghai Municipality Cultural Relics Protection Unit on April 4, 2014.
