Old Library

The Old Library was built in 1919 with funds raised by all sectors of society and teachers and students under the initiation of graduating classes in 1916. It has a fake-four-floor reinforced concrete structure, epsilon-shaped plane and symmetric facade, and highlights vertical lines. The corners of the left, middle and right protruding parts all have prismatic brick columns protruding from eaves, with tower-shaped decorations on the top. The building was built along the north-south road, with the main entrance in the middle and a large platform at the entrance. The top of the platform serves as the balcony of the second floor, while a small balcony protrudes from the third floor. Arched or square doors and windows are used, with pediment or plant pattern decoration on lintels. The Old Library now serves as archives and university history museum. The Old Library was announced by Shanghai Municipal People's Government as Shanghai Municipality Outstanding Heritage Architecture on February 15, 1994, and as Shanghai Municipality Cultural Relics Protection Unit on April 4, 2014.
