General Office

Built in 1933, it is Renaissance architectural style. Three-floor reinforced concrete structure. The building is five spaces wide, with entrance in the middle. It was originally known as “Rong Hong Hall”, which was named after Rong Hong. The inscription “General Office” above the gate was written by Hu Hanmin. Now the building serves as an office building. Rong Hong (1828~1912), born in Guangdong, studied in the United States during his early years. After graduation, he returned to China and made great contributions to China’s politics, industry and education. In 1898, he participated in the Hundred Days' Reform. In 1900, he attended “Chinese Congress” held in Zhangyuan, Shanghai, and was elected chairman. He was the first to advocate the introduction of Western learning, and wrote My Life in China and America and other books. The General Office was announced by Shanghai Municipal People's Government as Shanghai Municipality Outstanding Heritage Architecture on February 15, 1994, and as Shanghai Municipality Cultural Relics Protection Unit on April 4, 2014.
