North Fourth Building

Built in 1919, it is two-floor brick-and-wood composite structure. The second floor includes a wireless telecommunication room, an equipment storage room and a radio laboratory. The first floor includes classrooms and a telephone laboratory. There is a radio transmitting column over 10m high to the south of the building. This radio station was a unique piece of laboratory equipment in China’s scientific research institutions and universities at that time. In August 1929, the radio station was expanded. Two houses designed by renowned architect Fan Wenzhao were built to the east of the building. During the KMT-CPC Civil War, some students took risks to receive red waves from Yan'an. The building was used as radio laboratory, traffic building, old electrical appliance building, machine workshops and North Fourth Building successively, and now serves as the office of Law School. The North Fourth Building was announced by Shanghai Municipal People's Government as Shanghai Municipality Cultural Relics Protection Unit on April 4, 2014.
