Former Residence of Xia Yan

Located at Building 2, Garden Residence, No.178 South Urumqi Road, the British-style garden residence was built in 1932. It is fake-three-floor brick-and-wood structure. It has steep red-tile roofs, with shed-style dormer windows on both north and south sides, and large chimneys on west and north sides. Xia Yan lived here from 1949 to 1955. Xia Yan (1900~1995) was China’s famous literature, movie and drama writer, literature and art critic, literary artist, translator and social activist, as well as one of the pioneers of China’s New Culture Movement. He served as Deputy Minister of Culture, Vice Chairman of China Federation of Literary and Art Circles, Member of the Standing Committee of the Fifth CPPCC, etc. In 1994, he was awarded the honorary title of “Movie Artist with Outstanding Contributions” by the State Council. The Former Residence of Xia Yan was announced by Shanghai Municipal People's Government as Shanghai Municipality Cultural Relics Protection Unit on April 4, 2014.
