Former Site of Chongsi Building of Xuhui High School

Catholic Historic Buildings in Xujiahui。 Located in Xuhui High School, No.50 Hongqiao Road, it was completed in June 1918, known as “New School Building”. The facade has a masonry structure, while the interior is dominated by wood structure. The building has four floors, and is of the French Renaissance architectural style. Founded by Catholic missionary A. Gotteland in 1850, Xuhui Public School was also known as St. Ignatius College, which was the first missionary school founded by French Catholic Church in China. It was renamed as Shanghai Private Xuhui High School in 1931, and was converted into a public school in 1953, with a new name of Xuhui High School. Famous educator Ma Xiangbo graduated from the school. He took the post of president in 1873. In 1992, the new school building was renamed as Chongsi Building. The Former Site of Chongsi Building of Xuhui High School was announced by Shanghai Municipal People's Government as Shanghai Municipality Outstanding Heritage Architecture on February 15, 1994, and as Shanghai Municipality Cultural Relics Protection Unit on April 4, 2014.
