Former Site of Notre-Dame Monastery in Zi-Ka-Wei
Catholic Historic Buildings in Xujiahui。 Located at No.201 North Caoxi Road, it was built in 1929. It is a white, four-floor building of the European architectural style, with a reinforced concrete structure. The plane has a layout of Chinese character “王”. Notre-Dame Monastery in Zi-Ka-Wei was founded in 1843 in Hengtang, Qingpu under the initiation of Jesuit missionary Louis Sica, and was moved to Wangjiatang near Zi-Ka-Wei in 1864. Later on, a large piece of land on the river bank opposite to Zi-Ka-Wei Jesuit Residence was purchased to build the Society of Helpers, the Congregation of the Presentation of Mary and school buildings and dormitories of the girls’ school, with a total name of Notre-Dame Monastery in Zi-Ka-Wei. Most of the original 14 buildings have been demolished, and the only existing first floor has been converted into “Shanghai Old Station” Hotel. The Former Site of Notre-Dame Monastery in Zi-Ka-Wei was announced by Shanghai Municipal People's Government as Shanghai Municipality Outstanding Heritage Architecture on February 15, 1994, and as Shanghai Municipality Cultural Relics Protection Unit on April 4, 2014.
