Former Site of Hongying Library
Located at No.1413 Huaihai Road, it was built in 1933. It is fake-three-floor brick-and-concrete structure, with protruding entrance, arc-shaped steps and a large garden. Ye Hongying (1860~1937), born in Tongan, Fujian Province, was a business giant in Shanghai. He once served as Honorary Adviser of the Ministry of Agriculture and Commerce of Beiyang Government, Director of Shanghai Urban General Engineering Bureau, etc. The library was originally the editorial department collecting humanity historical materials which was affiliated with Jiazi Society founded by Huang Yanpei, et al in 1924. In 1932, Ye Hongying donated 400,000 yuan (currency issued by the National Government) to build the building at the present site. It was renamed as Hongying Library in June 1933, started trial operation in 1938, and was officially opened to the public in October 1942. In 1955, it was merged with News Library as Shanghai Newspaper and Periodical Library, which was incorporated into Shanghai Library in 1958. The Former Site of Hongying Library was announced by Xuhui District People's Government as Cultural Relic Preservation Unit of Xuhui District on January 5, 2004.
