Former Residence of Soong Ching-ling

Located at No.45 Taojiang Road, the garden residence of the European architectural style was built in 1920. It has a two-floor brick-and-wood structure with L-shaped plane. The facade is vertically divided into three sections, and falls floor by floor from south to north. The building was originally for German nationals. After the Anti-Japanese War ended in 1945, it was nationalized. Soong Ching-ling lived here from 1945 to 1947. Since the room was small, and was moist during the rainy season, she moved to the residence at No.7 Xiangshan Road in the second half of 1947. In the spring of 1949, she moved to the apartment at No.1843 Middle Huaihai Road. When living at No.45 Taojiang Road, Soong Ching-ling was committed to disaster relief provided by China Welfare Foundation and to supporting the liberated areas and child welfare work. The Former Residence of Soong Ching-ling was announced by Xuhui District People's Government as Cultural Relic Preservation Unit of Xuhui District on October 11, 2005.
