Former Site of Shanghai Hongqiao Sanatorium

Located at Building 5, No.966 Middle Huaihai Road, it was built in 1934. It is fake-three-floor brick-and-concrete structure. The building features a symmetrical layout, and highlights vertical lines, with a left and a right protruding block dividing the entire facade into five sections. Hongqiao Sanatorium was founded by Ding Huikang. It provided medical services for anti-Japanese officers and soldiers during the Anti-Japanese War, and helped Luo Longji, Zhang Lan and other democrats escape from danger during the KMT-CPC Civil War. After the liberation of Shanghai, Soong Ching-ling used Hongqiao Sanatorium as summer camp, children's health camp, children’s theater and kindergarten of China Welfare Institute for up to 8 years. In 1956, Hongqiao sanatorium became the first public hospital in Shanghai which was converted from a private hospital. The Former Site of Shanghai Hongqiao Sanatorium was announced by Xuhui District People's Government as Cultural Relic Preservation Unit of Xuhui District on August 2, 2007.
