Former Residence of Du Zhongyuan
Located at No.1897 Middle Huaihai Road, the garden residence of the Mediterranean architectural style was built in 1923. It is fake-three-floor brick-and-wood structure. The south facade has a basically symmetrical composition. The first floor has a semicircular arch-shaped loggia, on which is a terrace. Du Zhongyuan (1897~1943) was born in Liaoning. After the September 18th Incident, he attended the Anti-Japanese National Salvation Movement in Shanghai, and served as chief editor of weekly New Life. In 1935, he was arrested and sentenced by the KMT government. Commissioned by Zhou Enlai, he went to Xinjiang to promote the anti-Japanese movement in 1939. In 1943, he was secretly killed by Xinjiang warlord Sheng Shicai in a prison in Urumqi. The Former Residence of Du Zhongyuan was announced by Shanghai Municipal People's Government as Shanghai Municipality Outstanding Heritage Architecture on October 31, 2005, and announced by Xuhui District People's Government as Cultural Relic Preservation Unit of Xuhui District on December 4, 2008.
