徐家汇，因明末爱国科学家徐光启墓地坐落于此，后裔守墓聚族而居，且有肇嘉浜等多条河流汇聚而得名，徐汇区名也由此而得。

       徐汇区被誉为中国近代文化的重要发源地之一，历史底蕴深厚，文化遗产丰富，名人故居众多。先后被评为全国文物先进区、全国文化先进区，区内有上海武康路中国历史文化名街。至2014年底，徐汇区现有全国重点文物保护单位5处，上海市文物保护单位24处，徐汇区文物保护单位30处，徐汇区登记不可移动文物115处，其中名人故居（旧居）84处，另有博物馆、纪念馆15家。徐汇区现有非遗名录项目23个，其中世界级非遗名录项目1个，国家级非遗名录项目3个，上海市级非遗名录项目10个，徐汇区级非遗名录项目9个。徐汇区众多的历史文化资源正日益成为城区宝贵的文化财富和亮丽的城市名片。

Xujiahui is where the Tomb of Xu Guangqi, a patriotic scientist in the late Ming Dynasty, is located. Besides, Xu Guangqi’s descendants have been living here together; and Zhaojiabang and several other rivers converge here, hence the district name “Xuhui”.

Known as one of the important birthplaces of Chinese modern culture, Xuhui District boasts rich historical and cultural heritage and a large number of former residences of celebrities. The district was rated as National Heritage Advanced District and National Culture Advanced District, and has Wukang Road which is the Renowned Chinese Cultural-Historic Street. By the end of 2014, the district had had 5 National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units, 24 Shanghai Municipality Cultural Relics Protection Units, 30 Cultural Relic Preservation Units of Xuhui District and 115 Registered Immovable Cultural Relics of Xuhui District, including 84 former residences of celebrities and 15 museums and memorials. The district has 23 intangible cultural heritage list items, including 1 world-class intangible cultural heritage list item, 3 national-level intangible cultural heritage list items, 10 Shanghai City-level intangible cultural heritage list items and 9 Xuhui District-level intangible cultural heritage list items. The large number of historical and cultural resources of the district is becoming its precious cultural wealth and beautiful city card.
